Re-Nuble –“Capture Value From Waste”

We all seem to care a lot about sustainable business ideas and in this week’s research I found this blog post by Josh Garett about a new sustainable-business startup in the United States. Re-Nuble

We all waste food. George Webster from CNN describes in his article that 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year worldwide – according to an U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization report.

One of their graphs indicates the shocking scale of wasteful behavior – especially in North America and Europe.

This is first of all an ethical disaster, regarding the large the number of 870 million chronically hungry people in the world as well as an ecological problem. Greenpeace explains that our global food industry is responsible for a large share of all greenhouse gas emissions.

It is also an economical issue regarding the huge amount of resources that are necessary to produce and transport so much food, especially – if we just throw it away

Green Back Approach™ _ Re-Nuble_2012-12-15_14-44-09

Re-Nuble is a startup placed in Washington D.C. founded by Tinia Pina, which is trying to raise it’s starting capital through crowdfunding.

Josh Garett from the Huffington post writes about Tinia Pina’s idea to make use of the many tons of food waste, trying to turn it into a profit. Her approach is to collect this food waste to produce environmentally friendly fertilizer or to use it as a source for renewable energy (as it is explained in this video.)

My Stupid Opinion

I think that turning food waste into a profit while supporting the local communities with green and clean energy or products is a smart idea. But I also think, that it does not solve our global food problems of an unfair distribution and our wasteful consuming behavior.

However, making use of waste is much better than just dumping it and if this approach turns out to be profitable, it might inspire other sustainable business ideas.
